“Lloyd Gomez arrived in Fort Collins the day before Thanksgiving in 1955, with a wife, a dream and $1.50 in his pocket.
With that dream, lots of hard work and determination, he raised six kids and built a barbershop at 120 Laurel St. that became a Fort Collins mainstay for nearly 60 years, earning Gomez the nickname "the Mayor of Laurel Street."
Gomez retired this month. His daughter Benita Cederquist said she will reopen the shop elsewhere in Fort Collins.
The shop didn't change much through the years. There's no phone and no appointments. The barber chairs are circa 1950, and the cash register is the same wooden model it's always been (with no credit card option).”
